Deputy Speaker Apologises After Sexual Remarks

Embu Deputy Speaker Stephen Munene has apologised for sexual remarks he made about nominated female Members of County Assembly.

Mr Munene, who is the Renyenjes Central MCA apologised on Thursday for stating that more women needed to be appointed to keep their male counterparts "warm" and that working among women relieves stress as men "smile always and feel good".

"I apologize for the pain I have caused women MCAs and all other women. My remarks were reported out of context. I was trying to explain that women are important for assembly business.

"I take this opportunity (to apologise) because the information is already out there and members of the public are aggrieved," the deputy speaker explained.

His remarks caused an uproar among 11 nominated women MCAs who called a press conference to condemn Mr Munene for belittling them.

Majority Chief Whip Margaret Kariuki asked the Runyenjes Central MCA to refrain from issuing such statements in future by being more inclusive in his thinking.

Last week, the Deputy Speaker stated that more women needed to be appointed in the assembly to keep their male counterparts "warm".

Mr Munene added that it was good to be surrounded by women in tiring jobs like that of an MCA stating that it would be easier to work with female counterparts.
