Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero Moves to Court in New Petition Against Governor Mike Sonko

Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero on Monday made a U-Turn and challenged Governor Mike Sonko's victory despite having conceded defeat earlier.

According to the former governor's court papers, filed on Friday and argued before Court on Monday, more than 60 percent of Forms 37A used to declare Governor Sonko the winner in the August 8 election had irregularities.

Through his lawyer Tom Ojienda, Kidero submitted that some forms had multiple anomalies, others lacked poll station tallies while some did not have security features.

Kidero noted that 798 of the 1,300 Forms 37A, some were not signed by party agents and presiding officers, while others had varied dates with some not having stamps.

Dr Kidero stated that 12 forms had different dates of signing indicated by presiding officers, deputy presiding officers, and party agents, affecting 5,725 votes.

“How could one polling station have the same Forms 37A with different dates? This clearly shows that the results on forms used to declare the election outcome were cooked. The most affected constituencies were Roysambu, Embakasi North and Dagoretti South,” the Nation reported.

Kidero argued that the anomalies highlighted were enough to tilt the election outcome.

Mr Sonko was declared the winner with 869,050 votes against Dr Kidero’s 695,770.

The Outgoing governor had earlier conceded defeat and pledged to support Mike Sonko’s government.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony for the newly-elected team, Kidero congratulated the incoming governor but warned him that if he intended to transform the County then he must lobby the national government to settle the huge debt it owes City Hall.

“It is so easy to criticize from the outside but now you’re the governor and you will see the many obstacles I faced. I’m always available for any consultations, let us work together and make Nairobi prosper,” Kidero stated.
