The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has announced that some of the videos showing University of Nairobi (UoN) students being assaulted by General Service Unit (GSU) officers are fake.
IPOA Chairman Macharia Njeru stated that they were still conducting investigations to establish which officers took part in the assault.
Mr Njeru further stated they were collecting more information on those who took part in the demonstrations adding that some were outsiders.
"The analysis undertaken by IPOA's investigation team has confirmed that a significant number of videos and photographs being circulated on social media were fake," Njeru stated.
"There are genuine students who were injured by police officers as demonstrators were being pursued," he added.
The investigations by IPOA were conducted after amateur videos emerged on social media showing anti-riot officers clobbering students in their halls of residence.
The clips showed policemen using batons, whips and even kicks on defenseless students mostly lying on the ground.
Some of the students are seen running back to their hostels for safety, with police in hot pursuit.
On Monday, UoN's administration confirmed that 27 students were injured after police raided the main campus.
The institution, however, denied reports of the death of any student as a result of the brutal attacks by the police.
On Tuesday IPOA asked the students injured during the police assault to record statements with the Authority after the University was closed indefinitely due to security concerns.
The statement by IPOA read in part, "IPOA is kindly appealing to the 26 twenty-six students injured during the police assault on Thursday 28th September 2017 not to leave before recording statements with IPOA."
