First Lady Margaret Kenyatta Asked to Stop Campaigning for Uhuru

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has been asked to stop campaigning for President Uhuru Kenyatta to attend to a national crisis.

In an open letter published in the Daily Nation, the First Lady has been requested halt the campaigns after it was revealed that participants in the concluded IAAF World U-18 Championships had not been made.

Nation Media Group Sports Editor, Mr Elias Makori has classified the matter as an emergency that can only be resolved by Mrs Kenyatta who is the patron of the event that was held in July.

"Your Excellency, at this moment, committee members haven’t been paid outstanding allowances running over a period of several months.

"Medics who were outstanding, along with transport, accommodation and communications teams, have made futile attempts to get their dues in a most unfortunate anti-climax to the brilliant week of competition we hosted," the letter read in part.

Mr Makori alerted the First Lady that the problem had also affected Kenyan businesses which supplied merchandise to the Local Organising Committee (LOC).

He added that some of the suppliers have already moved to court against the organisers demanding their dues.

"First Lady, the lack of coherence between the sports ministry, Sports Kenya and the championships’ LOC threatens to erode any gains the championships brought to Kenyan sport," he stated.

Makori closed his appeal with a call for the Mrs Kenyatta to protect her legacy by resolving the stalemate.

"Your Excellency, even as you engage in crucial final weeks of Jubilee re-election campaigns, kindly spare some time and inject sobriety into the post-event management of the youth championships and ensure all suppliers and those demanding unsettled dues are paid.

"This will go a long way in indicating the Jubilee administration’s commitment to Kenyan sports development. It will help shape your legacy," he urged.
