University of Nairobi Students Demand School Fees Refund After Closure

A group of University of Nairobi students on Tuesday gathered outside Vice Chancellor Peter Mbithi's office demanding a refund of school fees following the closure of the institution.

The students accused Professor Mbithi of "wasting their time and money" by abruptly shutting down the institution following demonstrations.

Student leaders, on the other hand, demanded the immediate resignation of Professor Mbithi for failing to protect them from police brutality meted on them by officers of the General Service Unit on Thursday last week.

On Tuesday morning, a group of protesters from the University blocked Lower Kabete Road as they called for the prosecution of officers alleged to have used excessive force while handling the students.

The drama began on Thursday last week when videos surfaced online showing police officers beating students with batons, invading lecture halls and hostels, frogmarching students and in one instance, lobbing a teargas cannister into a locked room full of students.

The students were protesting the arrest of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who is a former long-serving leader of the Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU).

The Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett went on live TV and urged Kenyans not to judge the police service based on videos being circulated on social media.

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on his part noted:"I am just sick and tired of how Kenyans are abusing social media to propel propaganda. I have my doubts on this clip and have my solid evidence...unless we get a detailed report from the IG, I cannot comment on the matter."

The Vice-Chancellor issued a statement on Tuesday shutting down the institution due to the deteriorating security situation and gave students up to 9 am to leave the institution.
