New Court Order Issued Against Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has been given 10 days to respond to an application seeking to stop the implementation of the new education curriculum, 2-6-3-3.

The Ministry of Education, along with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, has been ordered to file their response to the petition brought against them by university lecturer Eric Mugambi.

Mr Mugambi was seeking to have the Mombasa High Court grant interim orders pending the hearing of the court.

Counsel Richard Ngari, who represented the two government institutions, asked Justice Eric Ogola to deny the application.

"The prayers being sought are weighty, we need to get sufficient time to prepare ourselves," Mr Ngari pleaded.

The Counsel, who stepped in for Attorney General Githu Muigai, added that the respondents still required more time to respond to the petition following the drastic changes made to the school calendar to accommodate the repeat presidential election.

In his petition, Mr Mugambi has sought to have the two institutions compelled to hold a national conference within 60 days before the start of the new school year in January 2018.

The Ministry of Education announced the intended change to the curriculum in December 2015 and it is scheduled to start in January.

Among the major changes that Mr Mugambi has opposed is the introduction of a new examination system, the Kenya Assessment Learners Achievement (KALE) and Kenya Certificate of Basic Education (KCBE).
