Starehe MP Jaguar Joins Protesters [PHOTOS]

Starehe MP Charles Njagua Kanyi joined protesters in Nairobi's Nyayo Market on Thursday as they demolished a wall that had allegedly been built on a grabbed land.

Traders at the market had been complaining since September about a private developer who had grabbed a section of the market.

The legislator cum artist wrote: “Today I led residents of Nyayo market in demolishing an illegal wall being built by a private developer. The wall is currently blocking Jadongo road.  In my tenure there will be no land grabbing in Starehe. Constituency Land will remain protected and will only be acquired through legal means.”

Nyayo Market traders had previously organized a demonstration to Governor Mike Sonko's office where they urged him to take action.

A number of the traders had linked the grabbing to Jaguar's predecessor, Nominated MP Maina Kamanda.

The lawmaker announced at the time that he would send surveyors to establish if indeed the land had been illegally acquired.

The traders at the market showered the lawmaker with praises as they thanked him for taking their side.

Others were, however, caught off-guard by the first time MP's action which surprised many.

Jaguar defeated Orange Democratic Movement's Steve Mbogo in the race for the Starehe parliamentary seat. Mbogo has since filed a petition challenging his win.
