Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka Demands Pay Rise

Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka has asked the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to consider a pay rise for County Assembly Speakers.

This was after the speakers stated that their current salaries were not commensurate with their duties during their induction meeting in Mombasa.

Lusaka asked SRC to consider the demands by the regional speakers stating that it affected majority of them.

"The speakers of Parliament are paid Sh1 Million yet we get just a quarter of that. Poor pay kills our morale because we are overworking," Kitui Speaker George Ndotto stated.

Trans Nzoia Speaker Joshua Werunga stated that the speakers should also be given financial autonomy and be allowed to handle assembly finances.

In July, SRC reviewed speakers salaries from Sh350,000 to Sh259,875 while that of their deputies were reduced by Sh24,000 from Sh240,000.

The County Speakers are also seeking to make it impossible for Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) to impeach them.

Forum chair Johnson Osoi announced that they intend to amend the law and add more processes other than the current requirement of support from 75 percent of the county assembly's membership.

He stated that a court must find a speaker culpable of violating the constitution before removal from office, noting that such a provision is lacking in the County Government Act of 2012.
