3 Actions That Pushed Raila to Withdraw From Presidential Race

Insiders within the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition have revealed three major reasons that pushed Raila Odinga to withdraw his candidature in the October 26 presidential election.

First was a move by Jubilee Party Members of Parliament (MPs) to make good their threat to change Electoral Laws using their tyranny of numbers in the House.

Sources within the Opposition coalition revealed that the move startled their leader prompting him to re-strategise.

Following the drafting of the two electoral amendment bills, the accelerated public hearings further propelled Mr Odinga to seek out a counter move equal to the blow he had been dealt.

Jubilee MPs and Senators went on to constitute a committee to hold the hearings sidelining their Opposition counterparts who have boycotted Parliament since its official opening.

It is alleged that the audacious sidelining of the Opposition sparked initial discussions of the possible withdrawal of the presidential candidate.

The third push came as a result of failed talks with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The electoral body's reluctance and seemingly slow pace to respond to NASA demands called for a more drastic approach to the election.

The sources maintain that the proposed changes to the election laws were the weightiest onslaught.

According to the Opposition, the amendments intended to push the former Prime Minister out of the race as well as provide a way for President Uhuru Kenyatta to be declared the winner in the event that Odinga pulled out of the race.
