IEBC Commissioner Roselyn Akombe to Fly Out of Kenya Days to Election

IEBC Commissioner Roselyn Akombe is set to fly out of the country days to the fresh presidential election to witness the printing of ballot papers by Al-Ghurair.

Dr Akombe, together with Commissioner Abdi Guliye, are scheduled to leave the country for Dubai next week to oversee the printing of the papers.

The electoral commission is in a race against time to ensure the October election takes place.

Meanwhile, IEBC is facing a shortage of staff in Opposition strongholds after a group of their temporary employees boycotted training following NASA leader Raila Odinga's declaration that he would not participate in the election.

A number of clerks, presiding officers, and their deputies are reported to have skipped the training sessions last week citing security concerns after politicians in the affected areas vowed to stop the exercise from taking place.

On Saturday, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati and Dr Akombe visited the affected counties in Western Kenya to access the situation and come up with ways to ensure voting takes place in Opposition strongholds.

In a bid to make the officials change their minds, the Commission assured that they would deploy extra security in the region.

On her part, the commissioner admitted that there were hurdles assuring that they would be resolved before the poll date.

“I would be lying if I said everything is in order. The truth is a lot needs to be done to guarantee the safety of all our staff across the country,” Dr. Akombe explained.

The IEBC on Saturday issued a new statement indicating that five presidential candidates who came in after a High Court ruling will not be configured to the electronic results transmission system.

In an internal memo, the Commission CEO Ezra Chiloba explained that the electronic results transmission kits had already been configured with only two candidates, President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Opposition leader and as such, cannot be reconfigured to accommodate new presidential candidates because of limited time.
