NASA Supporters in Mombasa Reject Raila Odinga's Demos

A section of National Super Alliance (NASA) supporters from the Luhya community in Mombasa County have refused to participate in anti-IEBC demonstrations planned by NASA led by flag bearer Raila Odinga.

Addressing the press on Monday, the group warned Odinga over his hard stance on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO Ezra Chiloba.

The community’s Spokesman Joseph Makokha stated they wouldn't be part of the weekly street demos meant to force Chiloba out of office adding that the IEBC CEO hails from their community.

Makokha stated that the street protests would only plunge the country further into political uncertainties.

His sentiments were echoed by Stephen Mandela, a university students’ leader, who warned NASA leaders that their push for Chiloba’s ouster would deny them the Luhya vote in the repeat presidential election.

“Chiloba is a member of our community and it would be foolhardy for us to blindly support demonstrations meant to force one of us out of office illegally,” Makhoha stated.

Last week, Siaya Senator James Orengo announced that NASA would hold demonstrations against IEBC on a daily basis.

This was after Odinga announced that anti-IEBC demos would be bigger following his move to quit the repeat presidential poll.

Orengo further stated that NASA would continue to mount pressure for changes to be implemented by the electoral commission before the October 26 election.

NASA has also vowed not to participate in the repeat presidential poll if Chiloba and other IEBC officials who allegedly bungled the August elections are not removed from office.
