High Court Suspends Fred Matiang'i's Ban on NASA Demos

The High Cout has temporarily suspended acting Interior CS Fred Matiang'i's ban on National Super Alliance (NASA) demonstrations in the Central Business Districts of Mombasa, Nairobi and Kisumu.

This comes after NASA CEO Norman Magaya filed a petition seeking orders to bar the police from arresting him.

Justice John Mativo stated that the suspension would be in effect until Mr Magaya’s case was heard and determined.

Justice Mativo further blocked the arrest and prosecution of Mr Magaya over the demos.

In his case, the NASA leader urged the court to intervene as his rights were at risk of being violated.

Mr Magaya further accused the police of engaging in excessive force and discriminatory killings in NASA regions.

CS Matiang'i banned the demos last week stating that the move was aimed at protecting Kenyans and their property.

He also announced that the government would proceed to charge all demonstrators who turned violent starting with Magaya who was the organiser of the anti-IEBC protests.

In a statement, Opposition leader Raila Odinga's spokesman Dennis Onyango stated that this was to allow the coalition attend to supporters brutalised and hurt during Monday demos.
