A podium prepared for NASA leader Raila Odinga was on Tuesday burnt to the ground in Igembe North constituency, Meru County ahead of his visit .
The incident occurred after Jubilee party supporters and Opposition die-hards clashed at Laare town minutes before a rally organised by NASA.
Reports relay that the two groups had been engaging in running battles and finally clashed at the grounds where the Opposition chief was expected to address the rally.
The clash grew violent as rival groups hurled stones at each other and lit bonfires along the roads.
Jubilee supporters in the area allegedly torched the podium as a protest against the planned rally which would be the first for Mr Odinga in the region since the August 8 elections were concluded.
It has further been reported that the Jubilee supporters blocked all entries to the venue to bar the NASA leader from gaining access.
Police lobbed tear gas at the rival groups in a bid to restore order amid chants of "aende Kisumu (let him go to Kisumu)". Luckily, no casualties have been reported.
The area is said to have voted overwhelmingly for President Uhuru Kenyatta during the August 8 election.
Tension remains high in the area as the Opposition team maintains its initial plan to hold a rally.
