4 Commissioners Who Always Oppose Chebukati Revealed

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati on Wednesday revealed that many of his motions aimed at enhancing the operations of the Commission have been thwarted by fellow Commissioners.

The Commissioners are said to have always been split in two with a majority of them voting against Mr Chebukati.

According to a report by Standard, the opposing side is always led by Vice Chairperson Consolata Maina who is backed by Commissioners Abdi Guliye, Boya Molu and Paul Kurgat.

The report further outlines that before her resignation, Dr Roselyn Akombe and Commissioner Margaret Mwachanya are the only ones who have always backed the Chairman.

The gaping rift in the commission played out last week when Chebukati reportedly walked out of a plenary meeting.

Insider details convey that the Chairman and his allies had proposed to cancel the October 26 repeat poll, a motion that was rejected by the four.

"The four commissioners resolved to have the polls proceed as scheduled on October 26, a position that has been pushed by Jubilee Party," the report reads in part.

In his statement at the Bomas of Kenya, Mr Chebukati stressed that he will no longer be cowed by the opposition within the Secretariat.

"As a lawyer, I cannot continue to be pushed by majority commissioners to accept legal opinions that serve partisan interests and are not grounded in the Constitution or law," Chebukati stated.
