Siaya Governor James Orengo has demanded a swift and thorough investigation into the death of Felix Isaac Olwero, a former Siaya County Assembly Clerk.
Olwero was allegedly shot and killed by police outside his Whitehouse Resort in Seme, Kisumu County, in the early hours of Monday, August 18, in a suspected case of mistaken identity.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 1am. According to a police report filed at Kombewa Police Station, officers on patrol were responding to a distress call about an attempted break-in at the establishment owned by the former assembly clerk.
Police stated that during the response, one officer opened fire and fatally shot a man wielding a machete. The man was later identified as Olwero.
In his message of condolence, Orengo condemned the incident as a senseless tragedy and demanded a swift and thorough investigation.
"Devastated by the tragic loss of Felix Olwero, former Siaya County Assembly Clerk and husband to our CECM for Sports, Madam Angeline Oduor, who was brutally shot dead this morning under unclear circumstances.
"We condemn this heinous act in the strongest terms and demand swift, thorough investigations to ensure justice is served. No life should ever be cut short in such a senseless manner," he said.
The incident comes just months after Orengo mourned the death of a senior driver in the county government, George Were, who died in a tragic road accident while on duty.
In a statement, Orengo expressed deep sorrow over the incident, revealing that Were was en route to Naivasha when the accident happened.
"It is a deeply sorrowful evening for Siaya County as we mourn the loss of one of our own, Senior Driver George Were, who was involved in a tragic road accident at Delamere Center while on official duty en route to Naivasha," he said.
Orengo further disclosed that the accident also left several other county staff members injured, including the Chief Officer for Education, Richard Ogeda, and Easter Okello of the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB). The governor conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and wished a swift recovery to the injured.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to George’s family and pray that they find strength and comfort during this painful time. We also wish a swift and full recovery to Chief Officer for Education, Mr. Richard Ogeda, Easter Okello of LREB, and all other staff members who were injured in the accident," he added.
