Murang'a Senator Joe Nyutu, a close ally of former Deputy Rigathi Gachagua, has addressed calls to resign from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and seek a fresh mandate under Gachagua's Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

The Senator spoke on Monday, January 5, where he confirmed that he was still a member of the United Democratic Alliance party, claiming that he shall remain there until he decides to leave at his own will.

According to Nyutu, he is no hurry to leave the ruling party despite his affiliation with Gachagua’s party.

“I am still a member of UDA and I shall remain there until I decide to leave. I will leave UDA when I want,” Nyutu stated.

The senator, who has turned to become President William Ruto’s fierce critic, has maintained that despite his political differences with the UDA party leader, President Ruto, the head of state had no right of rushing him out of the party which he used to win the Senatorial seat.

Nyutu defended his stance claiming that President Ruto played the same card while he was Deputy President when he fell out with his boss, then the 4th President, Uhuru Kenyatta.

Ruto had remained in the Jubilee party after the fallout, ignoring calls for him to leave the party and resign from his position as Deputy President.

Senator Nyutu now claims that these events deprive the president of the moral authority to demand that all pro-Gachagua elected leaders in UDA resign from the party.

“William Ruto has no moral authority to tell anybody to leave UDA because, of course, he differed with Uhuru Kenyatta in 2018; everybody told him to leave if he was not agreeable with government and he didn’t,” Nyutu claimed.

The MP claims that he began opposing the Kenya Kwanza government after realising that the president had different priorities from those he had promised during the campaign.

The move by Gachagua’s allies to remain in UDA was also criticised by Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, who claims that some of Gachagua’s allies still in UDA are bullying her into joining the DCP party.

Wamuchomba, who was initially seen siding with Gachagua, has distanced herself from the opposition leader, claiming that she shall remain a member of the UDA party until 2027 while calling for Gachagua’s allies to resign from UDA.
