NASA Drags AU Into Election Rigging Plan

The National Super Alliance (NASA) has hit back at the African Union, accusing the continental body of planning to endorse electoral fraud ahead of the October 26th election.

The Coalition's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Norman Magaya stated: "The same AU that facilitated electoral fraud in Burundi, Zimbabwe, Gabon, Togo etc assume they can do the same in Kenya. You will be defeated!"

"The African Union Election fraud and theft validation mission should give Kenyans a break. Dictatorships are crumbling across the continent," he added.

This came after the African Electoral Observation Group released a report on Sunday that endorsed the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission's (IEBC) preparations for the repeat poll.

The report named four counties where the election might not take place; Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori, but stated that the electoral body was ready to conduct a free, fair and credible poll.

The head of the Observers Mission, Robert Fola, declared: “Not withstanding the attacks on the institution, we have observed that preparations for the elections continue smoothly in the other 43 counties and promise a smooth, free, fair and credible election."

This is despite an announcement by IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati that he could not guarantee a free and fair election, and an admission by former commissioner Dr Roselyne Akombe that the poll agency was serving partisan interests.

The observers' report also raised concerns with the political environment in the country urging politicians to tone down attacks on the electoral body.

It further insisted that the October 26th election should go on as planned.

“Kenya cannot abscond the date with itself, October 26, remains the time for electoral commission to conduct a free and fair election,” Mr Fola stated.
