NASA Leaders in Kilifi Arrested

Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, Senator Stewart Madzayo, Woman Representative Getrude Mbeyu and six Kilifi MPs were detained for more than three hours at the Ngerenya AP post on Tuesday.

The MPs include Owen Baya (Kilifi North), Teddy Mwambire (Ganze), Ken Chonga (Kilifi South), Michael Kingi (Magarini), William Kamoti (Rabai) and Paul Katana (Kaloleni).

The group had gone to the area to distribute relief food before police dispersed locals who sought to be given the rations.

The leaders were detained after they went to the AP post to question why the police disrupted the event which was to kick off at 10 am.

Kilifi County Police Commander Elijah Ng’etich stated that they could not allow any political gathering at this time.

"The law is very clear on the deadline for campaigns. We knew he wanted to campaign and not only to distribute food," Ng’etich stated.

Police officers at the post stated that they were waiting for "orders from above" before they could release the opposition leaders.

The leaders, however, stormed out of the station and addressed the public before distributing the food.

Kingi condemned the act accusing the officers of being used to oppress the public.

The leaders vowed to return to Ngerenya on Wednesday to distribute more food.
