A National Super Alliance (NASA) supporter was on Friday shot dead after anti-election protesters blocked Bungoma-Mumias road.

The protesters were demonstrating against the postponement of the presidential election in Migori, Siaya, Kisumu and Homa Bay counties to Saturday, 28 October.

Youths engaged police in running battles prompting the security forces to open fire killing one man at Mteremuko estate.

According to Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka, tensions are high in the area over leaflets which had threatening messages to those who will participate in the repeat presidential election.

In Kisumu, protesters are alleged to have sustained gunshot injuries and a teenage boy shot dead in Kit Mikayi. He is accused of being part of a group which had attempted to stop voting from going on.

Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o, alleged that twenty six out of the ninety nine injuries recorded in the area were gunshot wounds.

Professor Nyong’o, who was accompanied by Bondo ACK Bishop Kobia and other church leaders, stated that police forces were out to execute innocent people opposing oppression, dictatorship and bad governance.

The church leaders demanded that no election should be conducted in Kisumu and asked IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati to go collect the ballot boxes distributed in the area. They further warned that forcing people to vote will only lead to more chaos and police brutality.

Governor Nyong’o declared one week of mourning in Kisumu county to honour the victims who have reportedly been killed during confrontations with the police.

Most ballot materials could not be transported to various polling stations, therefore, the IEBC decided to postpone the elections in the four Nyanza counties.
