2 Killed in Nairobi as Police Clash With NASA Protesters

Two people have reportedly been killed as police engaged National Super Alliance (NASA) protesters in running battles.

Reports indicate that several people were injured on Friday during the demonstrations in Nairobi’s Kawangware area.

In Dagoreti North Constituency, tensions remained high in the area which is a NASA stronghold, as youth barricaded roads over the repeat presidential election.

Protesters lit bonfires and blocked roads into Kawangware, forcing the police to open fire in an attempt to disperse the demonstrators.

Police were also forced to intervene and set up a buffer zone to quell fighting between traders and protesters with the former alleging that the NASA demonstrators were looting their shops.

Elsewhere in various areas of Nyanza region, several people have lost their lives following clashes between their police and protesters.

According to Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, four civilians were killed, 13 injured and 86 suspects arrested over electoral offenses. He further confirmed that 6 police officers were maimed in the clashes.

Voting has since been postponed by IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati in Kisumu, Siaya, Migori and Homa Bay counties. The counties were expected to cast their ballots on October 28 after the exercise was marred with insecurity on Thursday.

However, voting proceeded in areas where President Uhuru Kenyatta enjoyed massive support, but fewer voters turned out in comparison to the August election which the Supreme Court nullified.
