IEBC Demands Arrest of Jubilee MP

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) issued a statement calling for the prosecution of Kandara Member of Parliament Alice Wahome for committing an electoral offense.

In a statement posted on its Twitter account, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) accused the Kandara legislator of harassing one of its officials, who was performing his duties on Friday.

A video of Mrs Wahome confronting Mr Martin Malonza who was the Returning Officer at Kandara Constituency emerged on Friday and was widely shared on social media.

Mr Malonza, the Returning Officer, lamented that the MP accused him of rushing to take the results to the electoral agency headquarters in Nairobi without her input. He further alleged that the legislator confronted him outside Ng’araria Girls Secondary School as he was about to take the results to Bomas of Kenya, the National Tallying Centre.

According to Mr Malonza, Mrs Wahome blocked the road the poll official was using, forcing him to come out of the vehicle.

Mr Malonza stated: "It is then that the MP started grabbing me by the neck to an extent that my coat was badly torn. The chief agent for the Jubilee Party kept on refusing to sign the form, claiming that he had instructions from the MP not to do so until she arrived.”

"Since we had waited for her close to three hours, I was left with no alternative other than including the agent’s reason for refusing to sign the form," he stated.

However, when contacted by Kenyans.co.ke, the legislator denied that there was any such commotion, ascertaining that she merely wanted to verify the results of Jubilee's candidate Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kandara Police Chief Gregory Mutiso affirmed that they will launch investigations once Mr Malonza files a formal complaint with them.

The Returning Officer is yet to file a complaint with the police due to the time constraint since he was expected to deliver results which were expected at Bomas of Kenya. He, however, talked to the area OCPD who is alleged to have witnessed the ordeal.
