Police Speak on Raiding IEBC Official's Home

Police have denied allegations that they raided the home of Kandara constituency Returning Officer (RO) Martin Malonza on Saturday night.

Speaking to the Nation, Kandara police commander Gregory Mutiso denied the claims of raiding Mr Malonza's home adding that they were "false, alarming and uncalled for".

“Where are you people getting this information from? I have been in contact with the Returning Officer and I can confirm that nothing of the sort took place. He has, however, changed his phone contact to avoid the numerous calls.

“What might have raised questions is the decision by the police to escort Mr Malonza to Kandara Police Station to record his statement. He requested us to escort him because he did not want to use his car. So we picked him from his house to the police station. That probably is what raised eyebrows,” he stated.

The Kandara Returning Officer has been a subject of discussion for the past few days after a video of him arguing with Kandara Member of Parliament Alice Wahome surfaced.

On Sunday, the IEBC official broke his silence on the matter stating that the Jubilee MP was out of line assaulting him while performing his duties.

"She harassed and abused me, calling me all manner of things, saying I'm stupid but I had to do my job which I am committed to doing

"She took my coat which had money in it which I don't know where it is until today. It had Sh14,000. I don't know where she took it," he stated.

Ms Wahome while speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, refuted allegations by the RO insisting that she did not harass Mr Malonza but only wanted to check on the results that he had indicated.

“I did not harass him, that is not harassment. I was merely checking on the results to verify what had been recorded for the Jubilee candidate. I asked him calmly then he started shouting at me, who does that?

“He was very rude and did not want to be asked any questions. What I did is not outside the law and it is prejudicial of IEBC to issue a statement which I have not seen by the way asking for my arrest. The returning officer was supposed to sit and explain in a calm manner not causing drama that way,” she stated.
