US Issues New Statement Ahead of Presidential Results Announcement

The United States on Monday issued a statement expressing its concern about the outbreak of violence in Kenya following the October 26th election.

In the statement, US Ambassador to Kenya, Robert Godec, called upon leaders and politicians to avoid violence and control their supporters to desist from any violent activities.

"Leaders and politicians should clearly and publicly reject violence and work to keep the peace and make every effort to ensure their supporters do so as well.

"We welcome the work done by religious leaders, civil society and a section of politicians to help keep peace and assist those affected by the violence," the statement read in part.

The Ambassador condemned reports of police brutality stating: "We are deeply concerned with reports of excessive use of force by the police; we urge that all such allegations be fully investigated and any officers who have acted outside the law be held accountable."

In the Statement, the US also called on all Kenyans to remain calm and come together and reject political hatred and division.

The announcement by the US Government comes only a few minutes before the IEBC declares the final presidential results.

Earlier today, the Commission, announced that the results of the repeat presidential election would be declared at 3.30 pm on Monday.

The electoral agency invited all the presidential candidates to the Bomas of Kenya for the announcement.

The latest results from the IEBC portal indicate that President Uhuru Kenyatta is the clear favorite to be declared the winner.
