IEBC to Conduct Another Election on Tuesday

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is scheduled to hold a parliamentary election for Kitutu Chache South Constituency on November 7.

The election was postponed from August 8 following the death of Jubilee Party candidate Leonard Mwamba on July 14.

Mr Mwamba died in a tragic road accident at Nyakoe along Kisii-Kisumu road while on a campaign trail.

Jubilee later nominated Anthony Kibagendi to replace the deceased. Mr Kibagendi defected from ODM after losing the party’s primaries claiming he was rigged out in favour of Samuel Omwando.

Seven candidates were cleared by the IEBC to run for the by-election. The candidates want to oust Richard Onyonka who is seeking his third term on a Ford Kenya ticket.

The exercise was overshadowed by the October 26 repeat presidential election which appears to have disorganized the candidates as campaigns are turning out to be low key barely a week to the election.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati, in a notice on the Kenya Gazette, stated that campaigns for the by-election will end on November 5.

The Commission also plans to hold elections in Masalani Ward in Garissa County and Bogichora Ward, Nyamira.

“Political parties and Independent candidates shall appoint and submit to the Commission the names of their Chief Elections Agents to the Commission on or before October 23,” read the Kenya Gazette Notice published last month.

The Bogichora poll was postponed following the death of MCA contender Onsomu Okebiro (Jubilee Party) after a short illness.

Former journalist Beuteah Omanga will be defending his seat against a strong challenge from the Jubilee Party candidate.
