Report Discloses Number of People Killed During Election

The fresh Presidential election took place on October 26 and violence was reported in several opposition strongholds including Migori, Homa Bay, Kisumu and Siaya County.

A report released by the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) on Wednesday revealed that 13 people died of gunshot wounds in National Super Alliance (NASA) strongholds between October 25-30.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, an official at IMLU confirmed the number and stated that they had sufficient evidence to back the same.

"Yes we can confirm that number and we have evidence to prove the same," she stated.

The IMLU attributed the deaths to police using excessive force and strongly condemned the killings.

Several NASA regions boycotted the fresh polls, heeding to opposition leader Raila Odinga's call to stay at home on election day, protesting against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

This resulted in tension in most of the areas after residents blocked the electoral body from conducting the poll.

Groups of youth engaged police in running battles and reports on the ground indicated that in some areas people were roughed up and shot by the officers.

In Homa Bay, police confirmed that one person was shot dead on the voting day after a mob attacked Sindo Post in Suba South.

Police have been blamed for using excessive force in recent times with the NASA leader criticising their actions stating that innocent lives were being lost in the hands of reckless officers.
