The Real Story Behind Gor Mahia’s ‘Mighty Kogalo’ Name

Gor Mahia is a football club in Kenya that was founded in 1968. It is one of the most successful clubs in East Africa and boasts of the largest number of supporters in the country.

The club traces its route to the current Homa Bay County where it was named after a popular medicine-man Gor in full Gor Wuod Ogada nyakwar Ogalo and later given the nickname magic which is translated to Mahia in Luo, therefore, the name medicine-man magic (Gor Mahia).

The club’s history and statistics for the last 50 years have made it stand out since it has the best track record having won 15 league titles and waiting for the 16th one on Monday next week.

For the past 50 years Gor Mahia has been in existence it won the;1968, 1974, 1976, 1979,1983,1984,1985,1987, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 2013, 2014, 2015 league trophies with the 2017 one set to be given to them on Monday.

Apart from winning the league Gor, has also won the Kenya cup 10 times.

The club’s spectacular performance has not only been shown in local arena but also in the continental field with the club winning the CECAFA tournament three times and the African Club championship once in 1987.

Following the top notch performance by the team, the fans decided to coin the name Mighty K’ogalo to show their superiority and the unmatched record in Kenya’s football scene.

Where Mighty stood for their prowess whereas K’ogalo came from Gor’s last name.

Other nicknames that were coined later include; Taya, Mayienga, Sirkal and the Green Army.

Sirkal means government to indicate the fact that they rule over their competitors, Taya means light to show how they lead and the rest follow, Mayienga means earthquake to indicate why they are feared by most of their opponents and the Green Army is a symbolic term used to show their huge number of fans who turn up in stadiums with the green jersey.

So, as the Mighty Kogalo lift their 16th trophy, we wish them all the best in the future contest even as they take our football to the next level. Bravo Gor Mahia.
