Matiang'i Sets New Directive to Jail University VCs

Eucation Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang'i has invited the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to probe crimes committed by University Vice Chancellors that could land them in prison.

The acting Interior CS noted that the VCs who misappropriated university funds should prepare to go to jail.

"As the University management, we have made poor decisions in the past, we will be faithful to the law, we will cooperate with EACC as investigations are done, every official will carry their cross," he noted.

Dr Matiang'i noted that a lot of bad things have occurred in the Kenyan universities adding that most of them fall under the category of criminal activities that could sustain court charges.

The CS further pointed out that the Government had been fed up with the massive wastage and corruption that has thrived in the learning institutions.

"We can no longer deal with this kind of wastage; it is too high," he conveyed.

Addressing top university management, Matiang'i revealed that the Education Ministry has been receiving bad reports about financial management by the universities.

"One thing that Professor Collete Suda, (Higher Education PS) and I are tired of is the number of reports we read from universities," he lamented.

He further related the misappropriation of money with the rampant opening of satellite campuses.

"If you look at the opening of satellite campuses alone you can tell crimes have been committed and can sustain charges, " Dr Matiang'i stated.

He stated that the Ministry would also stop the opening of satellite campuses to strengthen those in existence.
