Drunk Drivers to Work in Mortuaries - NTSA

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is formulating a new policy that could see drunk drivers punished by being sent to work in morgues.

According to the body, current penalties of taking drunk drivers to court are too lenient.

NTSA Director-General Francis Meja stated: “We cannot have notorious drunk drivers causing accidents yet when they appear in court the penalty is very lenient. Once we have the new policy ready then we shall ensure it becomes law.”

Once fully developed, the policy will be tabled in Parliament.

This is the latest move by the body as it seeks to improve the country's poor road safety record.

As of May 11, 2017, 1097 people had died in accidents on Kenyan roads.

Kenyans' reaction to the news of the proposed punishment has been mixed, with some supporting it as others vehemently oppose.

It has been suggested that should the policy be implemented, it will be challenged in court.

This is because many consider the punishment cruel and inhumane.

Also, in an effort to reduce pedestrian deaths, four more footbridges will be built along the Thika Super Highway in a Sh822 Million project.
