Five buildings in Huruma estate will be demolished on Friday, Public Works Principal Secretary Paul Mwangi has announced.
Mwangi who visited the Huruma tragedy site on Thursday, said 15 others in selected areas including Mathare and Hamza will be brought down on Monday.
The PS said that owners of buildings adjacent to the river had breached regulations by developing the area.
“Any land that is within 30 metres from the river should not be developed thus the owner of the collapsed building developed here illegally. We have five buildings that are set to be demolished on Friday and 15 others on Monday,” Mwangi stated.
On Wednesday, two owners of the collapsed Huruma building were released on a Sh500,000 cash bail or a bond of Sh1 Million.
The death toll has since risen to 33 with about 80 residents still reported missing.
On Thursday afternoon, a pregnant woman was pulled out of the rubble alive six days after the building collapsed. The unidentified woman was rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital after doctors at the site performed initial medical procedures in a bid to keep her out of extreme danger.
