Magufuli Snubs Uhuru's Event at the Last Minute

Tanzania’s President John Pombe Magufuli on Tuesday snubbed the inauguration of President Uhuru Kenyatta for his second term in office.

President Magufuli, who had earlier confirmed attendance didn't show up for the ceremony but instead sent his Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

So far, no explanations have been provided as to why he missed the event.

The Tanzanian President is the only East African leader who has missed the ceremony as Head of States from all other countries in the region have attended.

Last week, President Magufuli in a letter seen by Kenyans.co.ke noted that he would be present during the inauguration.

"The government is informing the public that President Dr John Pombe Magufuli would be joining other heads of state for the swearing-in ceremony of His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta as the president of the Republic of Kenya for his second term,” the letter read in part.

Meanwhile, President Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto have already taken their oath of office for their second 5-year term.

Both President Kenyatta and his deputy took two oaths where they vowed to protect and defend the constitution and to remain faithful to the people of Kenya.

The swearing-in now makes President Kenyatta a full President with all powers.
