Police Statement On Placing NASA Leaders Under House Arrest

Police have denied claims by legislators Simba Arati and George Khaniri  that they were put under house arrest in an attempt to keep them from attending a National Super Alliance (NASA) event at Jacaranda Grounds.

Nairobi Police Commander Japheth Koome and Western Police Commander Moses Ombati dismissed the allegations stating that they were not factual.

Mr Arati had earlier claimed that police had camped outside his Kileleshwa home in Nairobi to bar him from going to a memorial service organized by NASA.

The Dagoretti North MP alleged that armed officers were deployed on Tuesday morning to his home and that they searched any vehicle that left his compound.

"I am under house arrest and it seems the officers have orders to ensure I do not leave my home given that I am one of the planners and mobilisers of the Jacaranda rally," he stated.

Mr Arati further alleged that the policemen outside his home had a water cannon truck and that they scared other residents on Tebere Crescent off Kangundo Road.

Additionally, Mr Khaniri, who is the Vihiga Senator, also made house arrest claims, stating that key NASA leaders would be blocked from attending the function.

Mr Koome categorically denied any such deployment affirming that officers in the city were only asked to ensure smooth celebrations at Kasarani stadium.

NASA leaders had planned a memorial service to remember their supporters who were allegedly killed by police since the original presidential election on August 8.

NASA leaders, led by Raila Odinga insisted that the meeting would take place and maintained that they do not recognize President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration.
