I Did Not Resign From Wiper - Hassan Omar Admits

Former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar on Wednesday revealed that he did not resign from Wiper Party before defecting to Jubilee ahead of the October 26 repeat election.

This emerged in court while he was giving his testimony in the petition challenging Governor Hassan Joho's election on August 8.

Mr Omar told the court he was still a member of Wiper, which is affiliated to the NASA coalition, adding that he was yet to officially resign from the party.

Governor Joho's lawyers, however, argued that his association with another party automatically disqualified him from being a member of Wiper.

Speaking before judge Lydia Achode, he noted: "I have not resigned but I have identified myself with another party".

Omar was the Wiper Secretary General until September when he defected to Jubilee which is led by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

His move to Jubilee was doubted when he insisted that Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo's victory should not be scrutinised as he won fairly.

Mr Mbogo vied on a Wiper ticket and his election was being disputed by former Kisauni legislator Rashid Bedzimba.

The former Senator was pushed to confess his allegiance to Jubilee when he insisted that the August 8 polls in Mombasa were marred by irregularities.

Moreover, Mr Omar pointed out allegations of ballot stuffing and other election malpractices and stated he believed they affected the gubernatorial results.

On Wednesday, Wiper party replaced Omar with former Nominated Senator Judith Sijeny while Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana was appointed the party’s chairman.
