Jubilee-Led County Adopts People's Assembly Motion

Kwale County is the first Jubilee Party-led county to adopt NASA's people's assembly motion.

Despite being under the stewardship of Governor Salim Mvurya, a Jubilee politician, a number of MCAs hailed the idea stating that it would promote inclusivity and enhance development in the region.

The motion was introduced on Wednesday by Majority Leader Joseph Ndeme who is also Mwavumbo Ward MCA.

"The people's assembly forums will help the citizens have a bigger role in safeguarding devolution, promoting equity and fairness in the distribution of resources and reforming public institutions," he stated.

Kwale has become the 10th regional House to adopt the proposal by the opposition, all the rest are led by NASA- affiliated governors.

Puma MCA Dawa Ngome echoed the same sentiments adding that the adoption of the people’s assembly would address challenges facing residents of the county and other marginalised communities.

Jubilee Party MCAs, however, strongly opposed the idea terming it unconstitutional.

Led by Minority Leader and Mkongani MCA Ndoro Mweruphe, they accused their Opposition counterparts of greed adding that the People's Assembly would lead to wastage of public funds.

They vowed to frustrate the bill by rallying supporters and leaders in the region against it.

Siaya County was the first county to pass a Bill to legalize formation of the people’s assemblies in Kenya.

Members of Siaya County Assembly took only one hour to debate and pass the bill.
