Senator Linturi Moves to Court After Being Stripped of His Degree

Meru Senator Mithika Linturi on Monday moved to court to challenge the decision by the University of Nairobi (UoN) to deregister him.

In the court papers, he wants the court to compel UoN to re-admit him as a student in the School of Law.

In November, the University deregistered the Senator as a law student over allegations of using fake papers.

The institution accused the Senator of presenting a fake degree from India to gain admission.

In June, Linturi was among 106 leaders that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) flagged as having integrity issues on a list it presented to IEBC.

The anti-corruption body wanted to block him from running for the Meru seat but he went to court and got a temporary reprieve.

Later in the same month, Linturi lost his bid to stop EACC from summoning him over alleged false self-declaration forms he submitted to the commission in 2013.

According to the forms, the Senator indicated that he had a Bachelor of Commerce degree in insurance.

In his ruling, Justice Said Juma Chitembwe stated that the investigation by EACC was part of its administrative action and the court could not interfere.

He noted that the investigation had not been concluded, adding that the legislator had the opportunity to be heard before a final decision was made.
