Why MP Ngunjiri Wambugu Walked Out of Jamhuri Day Celebrations

Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu walked out of Jamhuri Day celebrations at Dedan Kimathi Stadium in Nyeri County on Tuesday after a protocol hitch saw him allocated a seat far away from other dignitaries.

Despite being the host MP, the first time lawmaker was given a seat behind County Secretary Benjamin Wachira.

Dignitaries in the front row included Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Acting County Commissioner Joseph Ng'ene and Speaker of the County Assembly John Kaguchia.

Wambugu shook hands with many of the dignitaries before deciding to leave.

Shortly after arriving at around noon, Mr Wambugu left the podium, got into his vehicle and left the Stadium.

He was also accompanied by a section of his supporters.

MPs from Nyeri gave the event a wide berth with only Wambugu making an appearance.

Wambugu later commented that the matter should not be blown out of proportion, downplaying his decision to exit the venue.

Nyeri Central Deputy County Commissioner John Marete explained that a seat had been reserved for Wambugu near the Governor, but an MCA sat there.

He also divulged that a monument celebrating Nobel Peace Prize winner Prof Wangari Maathai would be built in the county.
