Moses Kuria Ordered to Pay Martha Karua Sh6.5 Million

Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria was ordered to pay Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua Sh6.5 Million for defamation.

In his ruling on Wednesday, Justice Joseph Sergon awarded Karua the Sh6.5 million for damages she had incurred.

Karua, however, had asked the court to order Kuria to pay her Sh20 million as damages for claiming that she procured witnesses to fix Deputy President William Ruto at the Hague.

In submissions filed in court, Ms Karua stated that the remarks made by Mr Kuria were malicious, unwarranted and defamatory.

She argued that the words damaged her image and reputation, as well as her standing as a politician, businesswoman, family woman and an advocate.

Ms Karua told Justice Sergon that Mr Kuria made the remarks in Kapsokwony, Bungoma County, on September 21, 2015, at a political meeting “disguised as a prayer rally”.

She further told the court that she has never met Mr Kuria nor discussed anything to do with the procurement of fake witnesses for the International Criminal Court prosecutor.

While cross-examined by her lawyer Gitobu Imanyara, she further denied meeting officers from the ICC who were in the country to investigate the 2007-08 post-election violence.

She, however, confirmed that she attended a fundraising held at Club Gallileo in Nairobi attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta to raise cash for victims of the post-election violence.
