KCSE Candidate Commits Suicide After Scoring C-

A KCSE candidate in Migori County committed suicide after learning that she had scored a C-.

Carren Ouma jumped into a borehole and died on Wednesday evening and according to her parents, this was her second attempt at the examinations after scoring the same grade in 2016.

She was reportedly disappointed that she did not qualify to join university as she had even gone to the extent of changing schools just to get a better grade.

The news came just a few hours after the release of the 2O17 KCSE results which saw only 70,073 candidates obtain grade C+, the intake cut-off for universities, compared to 88,929 last year.

There was also a drop in the number of A- from 4,645 in 2016 as only 2,714 were registered in 2017.

The Ministry of Education was on Wednesday criticised after releasing the results barely a month after the exams were concluded.

Teachers through their unions noted that the results released by Education CS  Fred Matiang'i were not genuine adding that most students failed because of the hurried marking.

The unions called for an audit of the 2017 KCSE results released by the CS at the Nairobi School yesterday.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Secretary-General Akelo Misori noted that the results were the worst and most irregular in Kenyan history.

“We cannot hurry to release results without a proper audit and celebrate the mass failure of students.

"The exam results have been released when other papers are still being marked,” Mr Misori told the Nation.
