NTSA Issues Ban on Night Travel

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a new ban on long distance night travel for Public Service Vehicles (PSV's) following the Migaa accident near Salgaa that claimed 36 lives.

In a statement released on Sunday, NTSA Director-General Francis Meja noted that their reports indicated that a majority of accidents occurred at night.

All travel operators were ordered to schedule their trips between 6 and 7pm.

The ban took effect on Sunday, December 31st.

In the statement, Meja revealed that further investigation into the devastating Migaa accident was being carried out.

A bus belonging to the Nairobi Bus Corporation is believed to have left its lane and collided with an oncoming trailer in the extreme left climbing lane.

The NTSA maintained that the ban was meant to allow for a review of the effectiveness of measures currently in place to improve road safety.

The accident sparked serious public outrage among Kenyans with many questioning when a lasting solution to road carnage, especially along the Sachang'wan-Salgaa section of the Nakuru-Eldoret highway would be found.

The accident took place at around 2.50am on Sunday morning.

President Uhuru Kenyatta sent his condolences to the loved ones of those who lost their lives.

He stated that it was unfortunate that many Kenyans had died in circumstances which could have been avoided.
