Why Mombasa Women Want Miraa and Muguka Banned

Mombasa County Assembly Nominated Member Fatma Mote is set to table a motion seeking the ban of the sale and use of miraa and muguka in the county.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, she claimed that the substances are causing broken marriages as women have raised concerns over denial of conjugal rights by their partners who have been rendered impotent due to extensive use of the substances.

"It is time we have miraa and muguka banned. It is destroying marriages in Mombasa," she ranted.

Ms Mote added that their children are also affected by the availability of the two.

"Most peddlers sell muguka at around 50 shillings, making it affordable to the school going children causing them to abuse it and miss out on attending classes as required," she explained.

She highlighted that she will present the motion to the House as soon as they resume duty next month.

Ms Mote expressed her confidence in having the motion passed as she has most Members of the assembly in support of the matter.

"I now have my fellow MCAs supporting me. This is a problem affecting most coastal people. I even have my male counterparts supporting me," Ms Mote explained.

Drug abuse in Mombasa and Kwale counties has been on the increase in the recent past despite efforts by the government and other players to contain it.

Coast region, particularly Mombasa, has been in the spotlight on issues of drug peddling since last year when the Government launched the anti-narcotics war.
