Form 1 Girl Rejected Over Long Hair

A form one girl reporting to school for admission was on Tuesday rejected for having long hair.

According to reports in the Standard, the student who was supposed to join St Mark Obambo Secondary School was rejected after she refused to have her head shaved because of her religious beliefs.

The student noted that her faith could not allow her to shave her hair and as such she will not do it to satisfy the school's requirement.

"I can’t betray my God to satisfy earthly needs, 1st Corinthians Chapter 11, verses 14 to 15 says: Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering,” she stated.

According to the school regulation; "All students must be tidy, hair cut short and well groomed."

A teacher at the School while speaking to the Standard stated that the policy on having short hair was aimed at enhancing neatness since the region had a hot and dusty weather.

"I don’t think the policy is aimed at victimising students. It is just for purposes of keeping the students neat because this place is very hot and dusty and it would be too demanding for them to keep long hair.

"It would be unfair for other students to allow some of them to keep long hair as others abide by the school regulations,” the teacher stated.

Meanwhile, Kisumu Director of Education Albert Langa't noted that he had not received any complaint adding that he will act appropriately once the matter is forwarded to him.

"I will tell them (the school management) that the policy is clear that no student should be refused admission on the basis of having long or short hair," he stated.
