Confusion After Boys' Secondary School Admits Girls Only

Male students from the St Georges Greenland Senior Boys School in Nakuru County were left confused after reporting back to school only to find that girls had taken their place.

The 60 boys learnt that the school's management had decided to convert the school to a girls-only school without their knowledge.

Parents to the boy students were outraged after learning of the development asking acting Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i to intervene in the matter.

A parent who spoke to Nation narrated that she had already deposited school fees only to learn that her son had been transferred to another school.

"On January 5, I deposited Sh15,000 and took my son to school and found the principal who informed me that the owner of the school had decided that the school should be shut down," the parent narrated.

The school's proprietor, Mr George Gichimo, explained that he had decided to make the drastic change following student unrest and indisciplined behaviour observed with the boys in 2017.

He added that only 16 Form Four boys were left admitted to the school after failing to secure slots for them in other institutions.

"The boys have put the rest of the students at risk. We want to work hard to bring more girls to the school and make it a girls’ only school.

"We have been looking for schools that can integrate us but no one wants a new Form Four student in their school," Mr Gichimo told journalists.

He clarified that any payments made by parents had been duly refunded. He defended the school's management stating that arrangements had been made to ensure the boys were all integrated into other institutions.

Nakuru's County Director of Education Isaac Nyang'au, however, stated: "A team is already handling the matter but I urge parents who have encountered incidences to report to the education offices immediately."
