Government Spokesperson Eric Kiraithe has on Thursday responded to comments attributed to US President Donald Trump in which he referred to Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as 'sh*thole countries'.
While answering questions from the press during a briefing, Kiraithe stated that Kenya aligned itself with the African Union (AU) statement on Trump's comments.
The AU statement read in part: "We ask that the U.S. President seriously considers withdrawing this statement and issue a public apology to all Africans and people of African descent in the world."
It was reported that in a meeting on immigration with US lawmakers, Trump asked in reference to Haiti, El Salvador and Africa: “Why are we having all these people from shi*hole countries come here?”
A number of African countries such as Botswana, Ghana and Senegal have protested Trump's comments.

In a letter to the US Ambassador to Botswana, the country asked for clarification on whether it was one of the 'sh*thole countries' Trump was referring to.
They further described the comments as “irresponsible, reprehensible and racist.”
Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo also declared that Ghana 'was not a sh*thole country' while disparaging Trump for his comments.
"We are certainly not a “sh*thole country”. We will not accept such insults, even from a leader of a friendly country, no matter how powerful," he tweeted.
Macky Sall, President of Senegal, stated: “Africa and the black race deserve the respect and consideration of all.”
