Government Announces Changes on Deadly Salgaa Road

The government has announced that the 22-kilometre segment between Sachang'wan and Salgaa will be transformed to a dual carriageway from March.

Last week, bids to construct the Sh500 Million road were closed and a contractor was hired by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA).

"Construction is expected to commence in March and will take a year to complete.

"Bids for the construction of a dual carriageway were received on Thursday 18th January and will be reviewed over the next two weeks," stated KENHA assistant Director of Communication, Charles Njogu.

The project is aimed at reducing the number of accidents that have been taking place along the mentioned stretch.

"The tender was advertised on December 19. It is an open tender which has attracted so many bidders," stated Njogu.

In December, at least 25 people were killed after a grisly road accident that occurred at Sachangwan.

Reports indicated that around 13 vehicles were involved in the crash; two trucks, a Land Cruiser, two private cars, lorries, shuttles, and three matatus.

A bus belonging to Modern Coast company heading to Kampala from Nairobi had one side ripped off.

The same area has been in the spotlight for a couple of other tragic accidents leading to deaths of dozens.

During the same December festive period, 36 people perished in another incident leading to the ban on night travel by the National Trasport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
