CJ Maraga's Office Reveals Truth Behind Letter Warning Raila

Chief Justice David Maraga's office has denied writing a letter warning NASA leader Raila Odinga against proceeding with his swearing-in plan.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the CJ's secretary stated that the letter was not official and the letterhead was not the Judiciary's.

"We have also seen the letter this morning. We did not write it and the letterhead is not ours.

"We are awaiting official communication from Maraga," she stated.

According to the letter, President Uhuru Kenyatta is the validly elected President and any other event planned to swear-in someone else is illegal.

"As per the Supreme Court ruling on 20th of November 2017, Uhuru Kenyatta is the validly elected President of the Republic of Kenya and the Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces.

"...any other event advertised as having been planned for the same will be illegal and an attempt to unseat a legitimate government, which would amount to treason," read the letter in part.

In December 2017, Attorney-General Githu Muigai warned Odinga that he would face the death penalty should he be sworn in as "people’s president", and at the same time bashed top lawyers in the Opposition for misleading the former Prime Minister to take an “illegal” oath.

Prof Muigai insisted that Mr Odinga’s planned inauguration would be illegal as Kenya already has a sitting President.

“Government institutions will do what they are mandated to do if and when the time is right,” stated the AG.

The NASA leader is set to be sworn-in as the People's President on January 30 and leaders within the Opposition ranks have insisted that the ceremony will take place at Uhuru Park, despite the premise being closed for renovations.
