Warrant of Arrest Issued Against Babu Owino

The Court issued a warrant of arrest against Embakasi East legislator Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino and his bodyguard Fanuel Owino on Monday.

The order was issued by Magistrate Martha Mutuku after the two failed to appear in court for the mention of a lawsuit where they are accused of assault.

Babu, alongside the bodyguard, were charged on January 11 for allegedly attacking David Gichagu who is a parking attendant at Fortis Towers in Westlands.

The two are alleged to have committed the assault with other accomplices who were not charged in court.

The Embakasi East lawmaker was also separately charged with other two counts of creating disturbance and using abusive language “in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace and create a disturbance”.

However, when the two appeared before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, they pleaded not guilty and were freed on a personal bond of Sh.20,000 each.

It was also reported that on the same day, he created disturbance by pulling, shouting and threatening to harm Gichagu.

The court further heard that the legislator abused and used foul language against the attendant, ordering him to open the gate or he would injure him.

Lawyers Harun Ndubi, Dan Maanzo and James Orengo, who represented the MP, asked the court to grant their clients reasonable bond terms.

Ndubi defended Babu by telling the court that being a legislator, the accused would abide by all conditions given by the court.

Ndubi also accused the police of mischief in arresting the legislator, noting that the two were arrested on Friday evening and denied police bail until Sunday, when they were released on Sh100,000 personal bond.

On Monday afternoon, however, the Court lifted the warrant of arrest issued against MP Babu Owino and his bodyguard after they presented themselves in court.
