Muthama Takes Action Over Passport Suspension

Former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama on Thursday took action against the Government over the suspension of passports belonging to National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders.

Muthama moved to court seeking to stop the Immigration Director Gordon Kihalangwa from revoking his identification document.

Muthama is among 14 other opposition leaders including Senator James Orengo, businessman Jimmy Wanjigi, strategist David Ndii, and Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho who were asked to hand over their passports

In a letter signed by the director, they were further ordered to surrender the passports to the Director of Immigration Services at Nyayo House within 21 days failure to which the passports would be rendered null and void.

Muthama's move comes a day after Ndii noted that the withdrawal of their passports was pointless, adding that they had no intentions to travel outside the country any time soon.

He dismissed the suspension, stating that Kihalangwa used a non-existent section of the Immigration Act.

Meanwhile, Wanjigi, Ndii, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Senator James Orengo on Thursday arrived at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters.

The leaders were there to serve DCI Chief George Kinoti with a court order that barred police from arresting 12 NASA leaders.

After the order was issued on Wednesday, the police issued a statement maintaining that the 12 leaders were not currently being sought in connection with any crimes.

"The National Police Service wishes to state that neither Hassan Joho, Jimmy Wanjigi, David Ndii nor the nine others who have sought anticipatory bail are being sought as of now in connection with commission of any crimes," they tweeted.
