What You Should Keep Off as Education CS - Sossion to Amina Mohammed

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General, Wilson Sossion, on Thursday called upon incoming Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education, Amina Mohammed, to avoid politicisation of education projects during her term.

Speaking at a press conference at KNUT offices in Nairobi, he stated that non-politicisation would ensure that the various projects within the ministry run smoothly without external interference.

"The curriculum implementation failed in January because it was aligned to the political calendar. We call upon the new CS Ambassador Amina Mohammed to cure education off politicisation if any project has to succeed,”  he stated.

He made this remarks while accusing the Government of disregarding essential pillars that would have been used in the piloting stage of the 2-6-3-3-3 curriculum.

He reiterated that the Union would not support the new curriculum arguing that the piloting stage of the new curriculum had failed.

Sossion also noted that without more teachers and learning materials, the implementation of the new curriculum would fail.

"The infrastructure and human capital requirements of the new curriculum are mammoth. As we speak, schools have not even received books that are necessary for teaching the new curriculum,” he conveyed.

Additionally, he stated that most teachers would be intimidated into implementing the new education system whose concept he noted had not been given sufficient time to process.

Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KePSHA) Chairman, Shema Ndolo, also chimed into the matter calling upon the Ministry to ensure the smooth piloting and learning take place.

“We should not allow the new system to be failed by the same institutions that failed 8-4-4. The teachers are in school, but there are no learning materials,” he stated.
