Why Kenyan Lawyers Will Boycott Court This Week

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Isaac Okero has announced new measures the society will take to protest the failure of the Government to obey court orders.

The association has launched the 'Yellow Ribbon Campaign', a multi-pronged approach to protest the State's decisions which the lawyers maintain are encouraging citizens to disregard the law.

As part of the campaign, lawyers through their respective LSK branches have been asked to stay away from court from February 12th to 16th.

However, election petitions will be excluded from they boycott as they are close to conclusion.

“There is a palpable feeling of outrage and dismay at this display of contempt for the laws and the constitution,” Okero stated.

As part of the campaign, lawyers will wear the yellow ribbons, place them on vehicles and other places to symbolize “vibrancy, tenacity and commitment to justice”.

Lawyers last used the campaign in 2002 when they used it to express support for Constitutional and Judicial reforms.

Okero explained that election cases would be exempted from the boycott as a show of lawyers' commitment to electoral justice.

“By excluding election petitions from the court boycott, the Society demonstrates the bar’s commitment to the delivery of electoral justice,” he stated.

Lawyers will be required to wear the yellow ribbons all through the boycott period, with nationwide protests to be held on Friday.
