Raila to Make Major Changes in ODM

Opposition leader Raila Odinga is alleged to have begun a plan to revamp ODM as a crucial political party amid claims of squabbles that threaten to tear apart the NASA coalition.

According to reports by The Star, Odinga convened the ODM National Executive Committee meeting on Friday next week that will be followed by the National Governing Council convention.

Reports further allege that the two meetings will also entail the replacement of at least 11 former officials, including former Secretary-General Ababu Namwamba, who quit in the run-up to the 2017 elections.

ODM will also be seeking to fill the vacancies of two out of three vice-chairmanships vacated by Eldas MP Adan Keynan and former Funyula MP Paul Otuoma to join Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok.

Among the agenda to be discussed is the increasingly strenuous relationship between the affiliate parties, with fears that the coalition is headed for a split over demands on the senior partners.

ODM Chairman and National Assembly Minority leader, John Mbadi, confirmed that the two meetings were going to happen but didn't reveal the agenda.

Odinga's new game plan emerged just a day after a near-implosion of the Opposition coalition, with legislators from three affiliate parties giving Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka the ultimatum of being sworn in before talking to them.

The cracks in NASA widened after co-principals Kalonzo, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula skipped Raila's swearing-in on January 30 after weeks of charging the supporters.

Their absence received a lot of criticism, with Kalonzo being branded a coward by some of the coalition supporters. However, the NASA leaders remained cordial and defensive of his co-principals against the retribution.

The decision by Wiper to unilaterally write to Parliament last week, staking a claim to a slot in the Parliamentary Service Commission is alleged to have widened the already sore relationship with ODM.
