Wafula Chebukati Announces Changes IEBC Will Make

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati on Thursday announced that the commission would revise the constituency boundaries.

Speaking soon after a meeting with the Parliamentary Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, Chebukati announced that the borders would be adjusted following the 2019 national census.

The IEBC Chair explained that the factors that would influence the decisions include the size of a constituency, as well as social and cultural dynamics of communities in Kenya.

He outlined that the changes would involve both the increase in size or reduction of the expanse of some of the current 290 constituencies.

"We are confident that the process will go well but the revision of borders within the country might involve some citizens being relocated from their homes," the Chairperson stated.

Reiterating the Chairman's position, the IEBC official handle tweeted: "The IEBC Chairman met with the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee (COIC) in a preliminary and planning engagement on electoral boundary review.

"Will also brief Council of Governors, County Assemblies, the Media, Faith-based organizations, specialists and others." the tweet read.

National Super Alliance (NASA) co-principal Musalia Mudavadi has condemned the plan, stating that it was a bid to give more power to the Jubilee Party regime.

"IEBC will give many constituencies to Jubilee. We know IEBC is planning to add constituencies but it cannot be trusted to deal with electoral boundaries.

"Even European Union observers indicated that IEBC cannot be trusted," the co-principal stated.
